Croft Head is a beautiful 17th Century detached cottage just 3/4 mile from the village, in the hamlet of Colthouse. This is a real gem of a property set in a quiet rural location with its own well cared for garden and fabulous views. The cottage is steeped in history and retains many original features, including beams, some of which are thought to be derived from the many ships of the Spanish Armada, which were wrecked off the Cumbrian coast. The owners have created a welcoming cottage ideal for family holidays. The enclosed garden is a real delight, with the lawn sweeping down to its own stream, complete with small cascade - great for paddling and trout 'tickling' (children should be supervised at all times). A Lakeland slate terrace surrounds the house with seating which is a perfect place to sit and admire the surrounding views and tranquility of this lovely location. There are many walks straight from the door, including a 1/2 mile footpath that takes you into the village.
The accommodation consists of
The tiled hallway has plenty of space for coats and boots and there is a downstairs toilet. There are two reception rooms at the front of the cottage. The living /dining room has deep leather settees and stove, Satellite Freeview TV, DVD and phone. There is a large dining table with plenty of room for family meals. The very well equipped kitchen has a quarry tiled floor, electric oven and hob, fridge, freezer, dishwasher, washing machine, tumble dryer and microwave.
The second reception room is set up as a playroom with games, toys, books, TV and DVD .
A small flight of stairs leads to the newly refurbished bathroom with whirlpool jacuzzi bath (perfect after a day on the fells), shower cubicle, basin and WC. Continuing up the stairs there are four pretty bedrooms all offering delightful views. Two doubles with kingsized beds, one of with an ensuite with shower, basin and wc, one twin and a pretty room with low single bed.

Comment: Lovely new year stay, if a little wet. Lovely walk to
waterfall above ambleside, go up the road by the
Salutation hotel. On wet days there is a great old
fashioned cinema in Ambleside.
Shower in croft head sometimes takes a while for
the water to come through, if you turn on the
bottom tap to get the flow then turn top tap it sorts
it, giving you a wonderful deluge shower. Cottage
was warm and cosy with good supply of coal for
the fire. Hope to visit again in the summer.

Comment: We had a lovely time. No crowds and cars at this time of the year. Great walk to the village. Super for the children to play in the stream and playroom. Ideal and even the weather was nice. Nice location to explore from and cottage was cosy. Kitchen very modern.

Comment: A beautiful cottage and garden very well equipped and lovely and warm. Just a short walk from the village of Hawkshead. It would have been useful to have the directions to the village over the fields available in the cottage after a few false starts we found our way the day after arrival but found it a bit boggy after all the recent wet weather. We found it easier to walk via the road but make sure you have a torch if you are coming back in the evening. All in all a lovely cottage in wonderful surroundings not too far away from the village. Would recommend it to anyone.
Many Thanks for your feedback, we have now put in the cottage a set of directions from Croft Head to Hawkshead village through the fields.
